Walk with the Walking School Bus!

Help build strong active travel habits, foster community, and reduce school zone congestion all in one fun program

Paid Walk Leaders

At select schools, SCY operates Walking School Bus routes that are led by a paid Walk Leader.

Walk Leaders are responsible for leading children to and from school each day along a dedicated route, encouraging safe travel and play along the way. Shifts are typically 1 hour in length which includes the walk as well as prep and wrap-up time, and are available every weekday before and after school. No minimum availability is required to apply; however, applicants who are available for all or most shifts will be prioritized.

The best fit candidates for Walk Leader roles enjoy walking rain or shine, have experience working with young people, and are punctual and reliable.

Benefits of the Walk Leader role include:

  • Living Wage hourly pay rate, plus 6% in lieu of vacation
  • Paid training at the start of the position, with professional development opportunities throughout
  • Valuable work experience transferrable to other child and youth care or active travel promotion roles, with professional references from SCY available
  • Part-time schedule perfect for students, full-time parents, or retirees
  • Opportunity to build connections with the local school district and municipal partners
  • Priority notification for other job postings at the Society for Children and Youth of BC

See below for current openings or to express interest in being added to our Casual pool to cover open shifts as needed.

Volunteer Walkers

The Walking School Bus is a participatory program. Volunteering and community involvement is essential, and we can’t move the bus without reliable support! We welcome family volunteers from participating families, as well as volunteers from the broader community.

As a volunteer, your job is to support your group’s Walk Leader. The Walk Leader manages logistics like attendance and family communications. Your role involves playing games along the walk, getting to know the participants, and making sure no one lags too far behind – you’re acting as another pair of eyes on the walk, and helping to foster community!

Volunteer walking shifts are available every weekday before and after school, and are typically 30 to 45 minutes in length. No minimum availability is required; however, we encourage volunteers to commit to at least 1 regular shift per week.

Benefits of volunteering with us include:

  • Regular exercise and fresh air on walking shifts
  • Recognition and perks from SCY – like gift cards, transit passes, local business discounts
  • Play an important role in reducing school zone congestion
  • Get to know other families at your school and build new connections and friendships
  • Save time on your commute on the other days, while enabling the route to be sustainable at your school!
